This phase was vital to ensure scientific accuracy in the final abstract. I began by reading the research paper the piece would be based upon, then summarized the information into the most important steps to decrease cognitive load, and lastly found reference images for the molecular and biological components. I always keep a list of any references and links I use in the beginning so I can refer back to them at any time through the project.
This article contained complex information meant for a scientific professional audience, so I had to really brainstorm about how to cater this piece for a general audience, while maintaining accuracy.
2. Design Ideation

After numerous rounds of sketches and altering the layout, here lie the three chosen composition sketches. The orientation and color palette were both undecided until further collaboration.
The horizontal step-by-step was expanded to serve as the final layout because the composition held the strongest visual flow and least amount of cognitive load for the audience.
3. Feedback
This highlights an example of a “final” piece before heavy feedback. The most notable change from this version to the final incorporated additional colors for color-blindness accessibility and to symbolize resistance. Additionally, the circled portion was lacking an important scientific detail, which was later added for accuracy. The reference list was also summarized for visual clarity.
*Throughout workflows, I prefer to utilize feedback through visual markups and typed notes for clarity between client and creator.
4. Finalize
The final graphical abstract utilizes design features that all cater to a general audience. The step-by-step flow, color choices, and labelling were all vital for a clear and concise final visual. The sole purpose of this project was to break down complex scientific information into easily digestible information alongside engaging graphics.
